  • Mom won't swallow all her food

My mom lives with me and has dementia. I have begun to notice that hours after she has eaten, there is still food in her mouth that she hasn’t swallowed. Why is this happening?

    Hello Murphy,

If mom is having difficulty swallowing, this is a dangerous issue. A person with dementia takes in only a very limited amount of food and fluids or can no longer swallow safely. It is important to try and maintain eating and drinking, even in very small amounts, for comfort and enjoyment. Speech and language therapists can help and advise about swallowing changes at this time. I suggest having her evaluated.
